Communications

The Communication department is responsible for management of the communication systems as well as supporting the command department with diplomatic missions. Below are the various jobs that make up this department.

Chief Communications Officer & Protocol Officer

The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for the operation of the ship’s communication systems, and directs all communications traffic to its intended recipient. This officer must be an experienced linguist to deal with the new species that exploratory ships meet, a computer programmer, to deal with the universal translator, and an electronics technician to solve communications problems on the fly. S/he normally mans the bridge communications terminal, liaises with Engineering to ensure that the communications equipment is maintained properly. The Chief Communications Officer is also the ship’s Protocol Officer, they are responsible in ensuring that all visitors are aware of what is expected of them while on board as well as assisting those visitors with their stay. They are member of the Senior Staff too.

Second Communications Officer

The Second Communication Officer assists the Chief Communications Officer in the operation of the ship’s communication systems, and in department management. This officer must be an experienced linguist to deal with the new species that exploratory ships meet, a computer programmer, to deal with the universal translator, and an electronics technician to solve communications problems on the fly. 

Xenolinguistics Specialist (2)

Xenolinguistics Specialists are scientists who specialize in understanding alien languages. They work in the xenolinguistics section to update the universal translator for new races and assist the Chief Communications Officer with complicated translations. They are also trained to operate the ship’s communications equipment and to work at the bridge communications station. They typically are typically Petty Officers or higher, with significant amounts of training in their field.

Communications Systems Specialist (2)

Communications Systems Specialists are specialized engineers who are experienced in communications systems. They work with their counterparts in Engineering to maintain the systems, and are trained to operate the ship’s communications equipment and to work at the bridge communications station. They typically are typically Petty Officers or higher, with significant amounts of training in their field.
