The Helm department is responsible for the overall management and application of the ship’s flight control systems including its support craft. Below are the various jobs that make up this department.
Chief Helm Officer
Chief Helm Officer commonly referred to as the Chief Helmsman and/or Helmsman, is responsible for the flight operations of the starship and/or embarked support, craft. The Helmsman is responsible for accurately plotting a flight plan and implementing course adjustments/deviations that allow for the craft to arrive at its predetermined destination in a most timely manner as well as safely. The Helmsman is responsible for steering or piloting the craft from its originating position to its intended destination. In tandem with piloting and navigating, the Helmsman works hand-in-hand with the science department to contribute to the updating of all star charts. The Chief Helm Officer also serves as a member of the senior staff and is a department head, overseeing the management/supervision of the flight control department. They ensure the continued education and training of the other department members, while also taking appropriate disciplinary action if and when necessary. The Chief Helm Officer manages and maintains the duty roster rotation for the flight control department.
Second Helmsman serves as second shift relief for the Chief Helm Officer and is responsible for the flight operations of the starship and/or embarked support craft. In tandem with their responsibilities at the helm, the Second Helmsman also serves in the capacity of the deputy department head, helping to oversee the day-to-day operations of the flight control department and assisting the Chief Helmsman with any administrative duties.
Third Helmsman serves as the third shift relief for the flight control department and is responsible for the flight operations of the starship and/or embarked support craft.
Fourth Helmsman commonly referred to as the Relief Helmsman, serves as the float shift relief for the flight control department and is responsible for the flight operations of the starship. The Fourth Helmsman assumes this role when one of the above crewman have scheduled leave time and/or a standard day off. They are also on-call should any of the above crewman be called away from the helm for an extended period of time during their normally scheduled shift (i.e.: lunch break, senior staff briefing, emergency relief, etc).
